Multibeam Bathymetry at NOAA/NCEI

Managing ocean floor mapping data at NOAA's National Centers for Environmental Information

As a Student Assistant at NOAA’s National Centers for Environmental Information (NCEI) through the Cooperative Institute for Research in Environmental Sciences (CIRES) at CU Boulder, I work under the supervision of Kevin Lally managing multibeam bathymetry datasets.

Multibeam sonar systems map the ocean floor by emitting multiple sonar beams simultaneously, producing high-resolution swath coverage of seafloor topography. NCEI is the national archive for these datasets, receiving submissions from research vessels across the globe.

Responsibilities include:

  • Ingesting and validating multibeam bathymetry data submissions for NCEI archiving
  • Working with large geospatial datasets in GIS and command-line environments
  • Supporting data quality workflows and metadata standards
